My recent series captures the rice transplanting season, locally known as ‘Bhaat Lavani,’ in rural Maharashtra, India. It’s that time of the year when families come together in the fields, transplanting young rice saplings by hand into muddy, waterlogged farms as the monsoon rain keeps pouring. The entire landscape transforms, everything turns lush green, the air becomes cold and misty, and the clouds descend so low that they almost feel within reach. Amidst the rain, mud and endless stretches of green, Bhaat Lavani becomes more than just farming. It is a beautiful rhythm of people, nature, hard work and togetherness.
